Enabling LibreOffice / OpenOffice Integration
LibreOffice and OpenOffice are open source productivity suites that you can integrate with Liferay. By default Liferay includes PDFBox, which generates automatic previews for limited file types. However, you can integrate either of these suites for additional functionality, such as document conversion. The desired service must be installed on the server before the Liferay integration can be enabled.
Apache OpenOffice is deprecated as of Liferay DXP 2026.Q3. LibreOffice is the supported replacement. Liferay uses the same integration for both suites, so if you’re running OpenOffice, install LibreOffice and start its listener on the same host and port. The Liferay settings below then need no change. See Maintenance Mode and Deprecations in Liferay DXP 2026.Q3.
Officially, this integration is supported only for self-hosted Liferay DXP environments. It is not supported on Liferay SaaS or PaaS.
Additionally, while both LibreOffice and OpenOffice are capable of integration, some of their features may not be compatible with all Liferay products. For the supported versions, see the Integrated Technologies section of your release’s compatibility matrix.
Liferay connects to a running LibreOffice or OpenOffice listener and doesn’t start one for you. Before enabling the integration, start the suite in headless mode:
soffice --headless --accept="socket,host=127.0.0.1,port=8100;urp;"
Once the listener is running, follow these steps to enable Liferay’s LibreOffice/OpenOffice integration via the Control Panel:
-
Open the Global Menu, and go to Control Panel → System Settings → Connectors → OpenOffice Integration.
The panel is named OpenOffice Integration and the Server Enabled help text names OpenOffice 4.1.x, but the same settings drive LibreOffice.
NoteAlternatively, you can adjust these settings by deploying a
com.liferay.document.library.document.conversion.internal.configuration.OpenOfficeConfiguration.configfile to your[Liferay Home]/osgi/configsfolder.
-
Check the Server Enabled box.
-
Enter the Server Host and Server Port that match your LibreOffice or OpenOffice listener. The defaults are
127.0.0.1and8100.ImportantYou should install LibreOffice/OpenOffice on the same machine. Using a remote host for the instance is not fully supported and can lead to unexpected issues.
-
Click Save. The button reads Update if you saved this configuration previously.
You can now use LibreOffice/OpenOffice compatible features, which include converting documents, viewing supported document types in your browser, and generating document thumbnails and previews.
The settings look identical when the listener is unreachable, so confirm the integration works: upload a .docx file to Documents and Media and check that a preview renders.
