Configuring Spaces
Liferay DXP 2026.Q3+
Use the Space Settings page to manage a space’s properties, sharing, recycle bin, and languages.
You must have the CMS Administrator or Space Administrator role to open Space Settings. Space-level roles are assigned to each space separately, while the CMS Administrator role applies across all spaces.
To access the Space Settings page,
-
In the space overview, click Actions (
) → Space Settings next to the space name (1). -
Alternatively, in All Spaces, click Actions (
) → Space Settings for the space you want to configure.
The Space Settings page includes the General and Languages sections.
After making changes, click Save at the bottom of the page to apply them, or Cancel to discard unsaved changes.
General Section
The General section defines the basic properties of a space.
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Space Logo | Space logo image (view-only). |
| Space Color | The logo’s background color (editable). |
| Space Name | Name of the space (editable). |
| Description | Short description of the space (editable). |
| Group ID | Internal identifier (read-only). |
| Friendly URL | The part of the web address that identifies this space in its Display Page URLs (editable, required). Liferay generates this value when the space is created, such as /asset-library-38640. |
| ERC (External Reference Code) | Unique external reference (editable). Must be unique across all spaces. |
Changing a space’s friendly URL breaks existing links, bookmarks, and redirects that point to the space. Set up redirects and update those references before editing the friendly URL.
When you change Friendly URL and click Save, the Save Custom Friendly URL modal appears. Click Save to confirm the change, or Cancel to keep the current value.
Liferay validates the friendly URL when you save. A friendly URL can’t
-
Be empty, shorter than two characters, or longer than 255 characters
-
Contain adjacent slashes or invalid characters
-
End with a slash or a dash
-
Match another space’s friendly URL
-
Use a reserved keyword, such as
api
Sharing
The Sharing section controls whether members can share items in the space. Select Enable Sharing to allow sharing. When sharing is disabled, the Share (
) action is hidden.
Recycle Bin
The Recycle Bin section controls whether deleted items are recoverable. Enable Recycle Bin is selected by default, so deleted items move to the recycle bin instead of being removed permanently. Use Trash Entries Max Age to set how many days items remain before automatic deletion. The default is 30 days.
Languages Section
The Languages section defines which languages are active in the space.
You can use the instance’s global language settings or define a custom default language and active languages for the space.
If you select Define a custom default language and additional active languages for this space, additional fields appear:
Default Language: Select the main language for the space.
Available Languages: Lists all supported languages. Move languages to Selected with the (
) and (
) arrows to activate them, and reorder them with the (
) and (
) arrows.
Prioritize languages based on your audience to ensure content is displayed correctly.
