Categorizing Content with AI Hub
AI Hub gives you two agents for categorizing content in Liferay CMS. Auto Categorize suggests categories for the asset you’re working on, and Generate Tags suggests tags. Both run inside the AI Assistant, and neither applies anything until you add it. In the CMS, the buttons that call them are icon-only, labeled Add Categories With AI and Generate Tags With AI.
Suggestions come only from what already exists. Categories are drawn from the vocabularies available to the asset’s type, including those available to all asset types, and the agent never creates a category. Tags reuse an existing tag when one matches, and a suggested tag that doesn’t exist yet is created when you add it.
These agents become available once AI Hub is integrated with your Liferay DXP instance, which includes enabling the AI Hub feature flag. If you don’t see an option described here, confirm that step is complete.
Suggesting Categories and Tags from the Categorization Panel
Start from the asset you’re editing to get suggestions without typing a request.
-
While editing an asset, click Categorization (
) in the side panel. -
Click Add Categories With AI (
) beside the Add Category field, or Generate Tags With AI (
) beside the Add Tag field.
-
Review the suggestions. The agent returns up to three, each as a label. To drop one, click its remove control. To replace the set, click Try Again.
A suggested tag that doesn’t exist yet carries a star icon, and the message above the labels reports how many existing tags the agent found alongside how many new ones it suggests.

-
Click Add Categories or Add Tags.
WarningA suggested tag marked as new is created in the space as soon as you add it, even if you never save the asset, and it becomes available to other content. Remove any new tag you don’t want before this step.
The suggestions fill the asset’s Categories or Tags field, and both the drop-down and a notification report how many were added. A category the asset already carries is neither added again nor counted. A tag is counted whenever you add it, even one the asset already carries, though it is not duplicated.
-
Save or publish the asset to apply the categories and tags to it.
If the AI buttons are missing, check three things. An administrator must enable the AI Hub feature flag (LPD-62272) in Liferay DXP, you must have permission to update the asset, and you must be using the general Categories field rather than a field limited to one vocabulary, such as Personas or Funnel Stages.
Asking for Categories and Tags in the Chat
You can ask for the same suggestions in your own words in the AI Assistant opened from the entry you’re editing.
-
Open the entry you want to categorize.
-
Click AI Assistant (
) in the top toolbar. See Opening the AI Assistant. -
Ask for categories, tags, or both.
Categorize and tag this“Tag this article” returns tag suggestions, and “Add the category Travel” adds that one category when it already exists. A name that matches nothing comes back with no suggestion, because the agent never creates a category.
Each request returns up to three suggestions. To change that, name a number from one to ten; a higher number returns ten. Separately, you can name up to ten specific categories and up to ten specific tags in a single request.
-
Review the suggestions and add them as you would from the Categorization panel.

-
Save or publish the asset to apply the categories and tags to it.
When the AI Assistant doesn’t read your message as a categorization request, or the suggestions don’t arrive within ten seconds, it answers as it does any other message and no error appears. When nothing matches your request, it says so and asks what you want to do next.
Where Suggestions Come From
The agent reads up to 150 categories and up to 150 existing tags. In a larger space, a category you expect may not appear. An existing tag can also come back marked as new. Tag matching ignores capitalization.
If a suggestion request fails, the agent reports an unexpected error.
The same AI buttons appear in the Categorization tab of the info panel in the content list, where you can categorize an asset without opening the editor. There, added categories and tags save immediately and no separate save step applies.
