Content Coverage Matrix

Release Feature (LPD-58677) Liferay DXP 2026.Q3+

The Content Coverage Matrix is a grid on a Content Marketing Platform (CMP) project’s Assets tab that crosses the project’s personas against its funnel stages. Each cell counts the assets assigned that persona and that funnel stage, shading darker as the count rises. Use it to find a campaign’s gaps: the audiences and buyer journey stages holding no content, or less content than the rest of the campaign.

Important

Activate the Content Marketing Platform using the release feature flag and a CMP license. See Activating CMP.

To open a project and use its Content Coverage Matrix, you must be a member of a Liferay CMS space with permission to manage projects and content.

The matrix’s rows and columns come from the categories assigned to the project itself, so a project must carry at least one persona or funnel stage of its own before the grid appears. Assign categories from both vocabularies rather than one. To assign them, see Personas and Funnel Stages.

The Content Coverage Matrix on the Spring Product Launch project's Assets tab reads 100% Covered because the project's only persona and funnel stage pair, Decision Maker × Consideration, holds two assets. The empty cell in the No Persona row falls outside the pairs that label counts.

Reading the Matrix

The grid is labeled Amount of Assets per Persona × Funnel Stage. Each row is one of the project’s personas, each column is one of its funnel stages, and each cell counts the assets assigned that pair of categories. The count covers the assets linked to the project or to one of its tasks, and it includes content in draft, pending, scheduled, and expired states, not approved content alone. Hover over a row or column header to read that category’s description.

An asset reaches the matrix once you link it, as Linking Assets to Projects describes. A grid of zeros means either that the project has no linked assets or that its assets carry none of its categories.

The No Persona Row and the No Funnel Column

Assets whose personas match none of the matrix’s rows appear in the No Persona row, and assets whose funnel stages match none of its columns appear in the No Funnel column. An asset missing both lands where that row and that column meet. An asset assigned a persona the project doesn’t carry still counts as No Persona.

Cell Shading

The more assets a cell counts, the darker its teal shading, across four tiers. The scale is relative: the cell holding the most assets sets the darkest tier, so the same count can look different from project to project. The No Persona row and the No Funnel column never set that scale. Until one persona and funnel stage pair holds an asset, no cell is shaded at all. That includes a No Persona or No Funnel cell that counts assets. A cell counting zero assets appears as a gap instead, with a light background and a dashed orange border.

Covered and Critical Gaps

CMP scores the grid for you. Two labels summarize it: how much of the campaign already has content, and how many audience and stage combinations still have none. The empty combinations are where the next round of content belongs.

Covered: The share of persona and funnel stage combinations holding at least one asset. A project covering three of four combinations reads 75% Covered.

Critical Gaps: The number of combinations holding no assets. A project with three empty combinations reads 3 Critical Gaps. This label appears only when the project has at least one gap.

The section header shows 0% Covered and 1 Critical Gaps because the project's only persona and funnel stage pair is empty. No cell is shaded, not even the No Persona and No Funnel cells that count assets.

A combination counts as covered as soon as it holds a single asset, so a high percentage confirms that every audience and stage has something, not that it has enough.

Both figures exclude the No Persona row and the No Funnel column, so assets missing these categories don’t change either number. Both figures also depend on the project carrying categories from both vocabularies. With only one of the two assigned, the grid has no persona and funnel stage pairs to measure, so Covered stays at 0% and Critical Gaps never appears.

The matrix refreshes whenever the asset list reloads, so its counts and figures stay in step with the list without a page reload.

Filtering Assets from a Cell

A cell’s count tells you how much content a persona and funnel stage pair has, not what that content is. Click the cell to narrow the asset list to those assets and review what’s already written before you decide what to add.

  1. From your Liferay CMS space, click Projects under Planning.

  2. Click the project’s title.

  3. Select the Assets tab.

The asset list shows every asset linked to the project.

  4. Click a cell in the grid.

The asset list narrows to the assets assigned that persona and that funnel stage together, and the cell gains an outline marking it as selected. Assets carrying only one of the two categories are hidden.

The results bar above the asset list names the applied Funnel Stage and Persona filters, the number of matching assets, and the Clear link. The selected cell also shows a Filter action that applies the same filter.

Select another cell and the filter moves with it, so you can work across the grid without clearing it between cells. Cells in the No Persona row and the No Funnel column filter like any other, and a cell counting zero assets leaves the list empty.

To restore the full list, click Clear in the results bar. Clear drops the cell’s outline along with every other active filter and any search text, not the cell selection alone.

Empty States

Until the project carries at least one persona or funnel stage, the section shows a No Personas or Funnel Stages Configured empty state in place of the grid, with an Edit Project button. Click Edit Project to open the project’s edit form, where you can assign the categories. The button appears only when you have update permission on the project. If you don’t see it, ask a project manager or an administrator to assign them.

The empty state reads Define personas and funnel stages to unlock content coverage insights and align your content strategy, above an Edit Project button.

When a categorized project has no assets, the Covered label reads 0% Covered and a No Assets Found label takes the place of Critical Gaps. Every cell shows a zero, and the asset list below shows a No Assets Yet message.

Once you know where the gaps are, assign personas and funnel stages to more of the project’s content. See Categorizing an Asset.
